Positive Self-Talk

Many students have habits have of putting themselves down, I so often hear " I suck," I am stupid," This is horrible," "I can't do it!" As a teacher, I find those comments are difficult to hear. More than anything I want my students to feel confident in trying and making mistakes. I want my students to feel proud and satisfied about themselves and their work.

This year in my practicum I heard my cooperating teacher say something that really stuck with me. When she heard the students talking negatively towards themselves, she asked,  "Would you ever say that to your friends or about them or their work?"  The whole class said "No they would never," so then she asked, "Why would you say it about yourself?" That really hit home for some of the class, they are more aware of how they are talking to themselves which is nice to see.

My cooperating teacher also showed them this chart and demonstrated how the students can use it. This is now hung up in the classroom and referred to as a reminder to use positive self-talk! It is a great tool to use if students are struggling with being to hard or negative on themselves.
